Welcome to the forty first blog post and the beginning of season two of TheLawyerFiles.
Thank you, as always, for subscribing and continuing to follow the journeys of aspiring solicitors and legal professionals who are shaping the future of the profession through resilience, creativity, and ambition.
✨ In this edition, we feature Regan, a trainee solicitor at a leading commercial law firm, whose journey into law reflects curiosity, confidence, and a willingness to carve out her own path.
Regan’s interest in law began early, sparked by her studies in Modern Studies where she developed a strong interest in how politics, crime, and global issues intersect. Encouraged to think critically and challenge ideas, she quickly realised that law was the path she wanted to pursue and has remained committed to it ever since.
Alongside her legal studies, Regan has built a strong presence as a content creator, using social media as a platform to share her journey and connect with others. Through this, she has not only developed her confidence and communication skills, but also embraced the importance of visibility, recognising that opportunities often come from putting yourself out there.
Her academic work also reflects this creativity. Her dissertation, inspired by Taylor Swift, explored copyright law and the importance of artists owning their work, demonstrating how legal principles interact with real world industries and cultural moments.
From her vacation placement experience to her upcoming training contract, Regan’s journey highlights the importance of exploration, growth, and keeping an open mind. With an interest in intellectual property, media, and corporate law, she is excited to experience different areas and discover where her strengths lie.
In this conversation, Regan reflects on building confidence, embracing opportunities beyond the classroom, and how creativity and communication can play a powerful role in a legal career.
If you are an aspiring solicitor looking to stand out, build confidence, and explore the intersection between law and creativity, Regan’s story offers both inspiration and practical insight.
Let’s dive in 💡

1. You’ve recently completed your Diploma in Professional Legal Practice after a Scots Law LLB at the University of Glasgow — what inspired your journey into law, and what ultimately led you to pursue a training contract at a commercial law firm?
Yes, my first steps towards pursuing a career in law came through a subject I studied at school called Modern Studies. Learning how politics, crime and global issues were interconnected really sparked my interest. My teacher encouraged me to think critically and question what was in front of me, and he suggested law as a career path and I have never looked back since.
In terms of my training contract, I wanted to go somewhere that was both friendly and structured in its approach to training. Before applying, every interaction I had with people in the legal profession, whether at law fairs or open days, was really positive. It became clear to me how important it was to join a firm that genuinely supports your development from day one.
2. Your dissertation “You Belong With Me: Copyright Law in the Fight for Ownership of Master Recordings” blends academia with pop culture and even went viral. Can you share how you came up with the idea, and what you learned about copyright law through this unique topic?
The idea came to me during my intellectual property law class. The lecturer had mentioned that it would be amazing if someone used Taylor Swift as an example in their dissertation, and I ran with that. My dissertation explored the importance of an artist’s right to own their own work. Taylor Swift was the perfect example as her music was publicly sold to someone who was not her. I learned that copyright law around any kind of art is complex to navigate. Due to external factors such as funding and marketing, it is often necessary that the artist does not own their work.
3. You’ve balanced legal studies with a strong presence as a social media content creator, even being invited to speak on a P&O Cruises trip to the Norwegian Fjords about your journey. How has public speaking and content creation shaped your confidence and communication skills in a legal context?
Content creation has definitely made me much more confident. I have always enjoyed public speaking but at university it was not something I had many opportunities to do. By creating content, I was able to find my own voice and identity outside of law. One of the main lessons I learned through the opportunities I was offered through social media is that no one knows what you have achieved unless you show them. This has encouraged me to put myself out there more, both within the legal industry and beyond.
4. From your role as VP of Scots Law at the Glasgow University Bar and Advocacy Society to your vacation placement, you have gained a wide range of experiences. Which role has had the biggest impact on your professional development so far, and why?
Definitely my vacation placement. It was the first time I had proper exposure to how a commercial law firm operates, and it was an incredibly motivating experience. I was in my penultimate year of university during this time and it really encouraged me to focus going into my final year, knowing what I was working towards.
5. Looking ahead to starting your training contract, what areas of law are you most excited to explore, and how do you see your skills in creativity, social media and public engagement adding value to your future career as a solicitor?
Intellectual property for sure, or anything media and corporate related. That being said, I do not feel set on one specific area, which is why I am grateful for the opportunity to experience different seats during my training contract.
I believe my social media skills can be implemented in the legal world in a natural way. Even recently, I delivered a talk to a group of young people on the responsible use of social media in the workplace. Posting online has opened many doors for me personally, but it has also created professional opportunities within the legal industry.
